The passion for making classical guitars stemmed from Jake interests in working with wood and playing the guitar. His Cornish grandfather was a wheelwright and made almost anything which was needed from wood such as carts, wheelbarrows, gates and furniture. Jake inherited a few of his tools, passed onto him from his dad, which he love using even nowadays. Jake use his name “Purnell” for his guitars as a tribute to him.
His grandfather passed on his interest in making things to his dad who is a toy maker. It was in his dads workshop where he leant how to make things with wood and how things should look. He spent what would be his apprenticeship with him making toys in Suffolk.
Playing the guitar was something Jake always done. At 16 he started learning classical guitar and this began his fascination with this particular instrument. It was natural for him to learn how to make them being the combination of his interests in life. He believed it was something he could be good at.
After attending the London Guildhall University, where Jake became a Bachelor of Science, studying Musical Instrument Tech, he setted up a workshop, first in Laxfield and then in Reydon, Suffolk and have been making guitars ever since.
